Barcelona: M. Carlos Butsems & Fradera, 1897

Founded in the late nineteenth century, the building materials firm M. Carlos Butsems & Fradera dominated the artificial stone and hydraulic tile market in Barcelona for decades, bolstered by an award-winning reputation that included recognition at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition.  This catalog, which stresses the firm’s technical mastery and artisanship, also emphasizes the breadth of their offerings, ranging from polychromatic arabesque floor tiles to imitation granite stairs and sewer pipes.  Exhibiting a diverse collection of wares, the catalog offers an array of color plates as well as pages of photographed cast stone ornamentation including mascarons, composite capitals, foliate brackets, and urns.
