How can I find out if a work of art is currently on view?

  • When visiting the Museum, check with the Information Desk located in the Great Hall. Please provide the Visitor Services representative with as much information as possible, including artist, title, nationality, type of object, and approximate date.
  • Call the Visitor Services Desk at (212) 570-3791.
  • Study Centers: Objects belonging to the Museum’s American Paintings and Sculpture and American Decorative Arts collections not on view in the galleries are made available to the public in the Henry R. Luce Study Center (no appointment necessary). Works from the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas; Drawings and Prints; Photographs; and the Antonio Ratti Textile Center are also available for viewing, by appointment, to qualified researchers via the departmental Study Centers.
  • Be aware that even the Museum’s greatest treasures may be off exhibition for purposes of conservation, loan, study, or for other reasons.
