The manipulation of the brush as applied to design

The manipulation of the brush as applied to design: a course of brushwork for higher grade elementary and secondary schools.

Thorogood, Stanley

London : George Philip & Son, 1900

Watson Library Special Collections: ND1505 .T46 1900

While employed at the Wedgwood Institute, Stanley Thorogood compiled this handbook as a teacher’s guide. Including instructions on color mixing, paper selection, and proper brush handling, the showpiece of the book is its plates of practice brushstrokes and designs. Featuring Art Nouveau elements, and Etruscan and Hispano-Moresque ornament, the colorful illustrations function as repetition exercises for the young aspiring pottery artist.
