Watson Library Instruction for Volunteer Guides

Calling all docents!  Get ready for the fall season by brushing up on your research skills and adding new information to your tour!  Watson and Nolen Libraries are great places to start your research.  Come learn new research skills, or brush up on old ones! The classes being taught this fall include the consistently popular Finding Information on Objects in the MMA (both lecture and hands-on format) and Beyond the Website: Oxford Art and Art Index.  New this fall will be The Art of Fashion Research, in which you can learn how to use several key online resources to find information on fashion from around the globe.  Be sure to scroll through this entire post to find out class details and sign-up information.  We look forward to working with you this fall!

The Art of Fashion Research–NEW!

Learn how to use several key online resources to find information on fashion from around the globe, from “fancy dress” seen in European paintings, to Asmat costumes (AAOA) and contemporary haute couture.  Resources include the Berg Fashion Library, Style, Vogue,and the Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History.  Format: lecture/demonstration.

Object Research — Hands-On

Using hands-on practice, you will be guided in finding object information in the MMA Website, Watsonline, and the Timeline of Art History.  Specific museum objects will be used as examples.  This class is recommended for those who have taken the lecture class and would like guided hands-on practice using sample searches.  Format: Hands-On.  Class limit: 6 per session

Beyond the Website: Oxford Art and Art Index

There are other resources that can provide further information to enhance and contextualize your study of art objects int he Museum.  Oxford Art Online, a searchable gateway to art history, biographies, art movements and art in different cultures.  Art Index is another gateway, this one to finding periodical articles.  In contrast to JSTOR, Art Index has more recent articles in full-text and includes material from “popular” art journals; it also indexes periodicals that are not included in JSTOR.  Format: Lecture/demonstration.

Finding Information on Objects in the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Learn how to research objects in the Museum using the MMA Website, Watsonline, the Timeline of Art History and JSTOR.  This class is a “must” for everyone, and if you haven’t taken it recently, it would be worthwhile to do it again. The class content has been updated to reflect changes in the resources used to find the information you need.  Format: lecture/demonstration.
