Posted by Leah High on May 16th, 2012

A stack of handouts with this information is available at the Nolen Desk.

GUIDE FOR LOCATING RESOURCES FOR EDUCATORS ON THE MMA WEBSITE

 VISIT the Museum’s website: www.metmuseum.org

1. Select Learn on the website’s home page.  You will find a selection of online features for educators and other visitors to explore the Museum’s collection.

2. Select For Educators

3. Then, from the list on the left, select Lesson Plans and Pre-visit Guides or Publications for Educators

Most of these publications are in PDF format and may be downloaded and printed. The lesson plans are grouped according to grade level.  Many plans overlap grade ranges yet can be tailored to suit individual needs.  Within each lesson plan is a section that lists “Resources.”  Each resource links directly to a record in the library’s online catalog: Watsonline or to the Heilbrunn Timeline of Art HistoryRead the rest of this entry »

SUNY Librarians’ visit, Friday, June 8 3:00-4:30

Posted by Nancy Mandel on May 16th, 2012

FIT is hosting the annual meeting of librarians from the State University of New York system this year and asked if we would offer a tour of Watson for a group of 20 or so librarians. They will come at 3:00 on June 8 for a tour of Watson with Ken, a visit to Book Conservation, a conversation session with a group of staff members, and a visit to Nolen.

We will use the Periodicals Room for the discussion, so it will be closed to visitors for half or three-quarters of an hour, from 3:45 to 4:30 or so. Thanks to the staff members who have agreed to participate (Ken, Mindy, Holly, Linda, Lisa, Dan, Robyn, Deborah, Ross, Naomi).

Friends’ New Acquisitions 2012, Weds., June 6, 6-8

Posted by Nancy Mandel on May 16th, 2012

Friends purchase

The Friends of the Library will have their annual show & tell of selected special purchases made with Friends’ funds over the fiscal year on Wednesday, June 6, from six to eight in the evening.  Ken, with Holly’s help, will be setting out the books on the back tables in the Reading Room over the course of the day, and we will need to close the room a little early (5:30) to set up the refreshments.

It is always a fun and relaxed evening with an interesting array of items on view and a really good feeling among the Friends.  I know you hear a lot about them and seldom get to meet them; here’s your chance.  Staff members who would like to attend are very welcome, though Ken wants it to be clear that no one is required to stick around.  If you’d drop me a note to let me know, I’ll be better able to judge the quantity of hors d’oeuvres required.

Remove Records From List in Global Update

Posted by Oleg Kreymer on May 14th, 2012

In Global Update, if you “toggle” between different fields, Remove button (and drop-down option under Tools) gets grayed out. To reactivate Remove option, one has to re-run Search on the displayed field. Below, please find instructions from Innovative:

1. Search for the review file containing the records in question.
2. Use the toggle button to select the field you wish to display
3. Then, click on the Search button again. This will search the review file with your toggle options highlighted
4. THEN, go to Tools > Remove record from list, and you should see that it is activated. You can select whichever record(s) you wish to remove from the list and it should work.

Tips for Interacting with People with Disabilities

Posted by Leah High on May 13th, 2012

Naomi and I met with Deborah Jaffe and Rebecca McGinnis from Access Coordination to learn about some of the ways we may better serve our library visitors with disabilities.  We also received guidance on best practices for handling rare instances when a visitor with a disability is being disruptive or uncooperative.  Access Coordination is eager to answer your questions, and we hope to schedule some training opportunities for library staff and volunteers in the coming months.

Tips for Interacting with People with Disabilities

How to Help

  • Introduce yourself and offer assistance
  • Don’t be offended if your help is not needed
  • Be polite and patient when offering assistance.
  • Be courteous, but not condescending
  • Assist disabled persons when necessary or requested, but do not discourage their active participation
  • Allow people the dignity to make their own choices Read the rest of this entry »

OCLC Global Council Annual Meeting April 16-18, 2012

Posted by Oleg Kreymer on May 10th, 2012

OCLC Global Council Annual Meeting.

Videos, presentations and documents from this meeting are available here: http://www.oclc.org/us/en/multimedia/2012/global-council-04-2012.htm

I recommend watching “Reflections from Jay Jordan” (Wednesday morning) and a keynote address by Sue Polanka, Head of Reference and Instruction, Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio (Monday afternoon).  Jay gave an excellent overview of OCLC’s history and priorities, and Sue offered an in-depth analysis of how our users behave in the  library universe driven by the “eFactor”  (it is a long talk, but watch at least first 20 minutes).

New Turkish material

Posted by Holly Phillips on May 4th, 2012

We recently acquired approximately one hundred and fifty monographs and exhibition catalogs on Turkish art and culture as special purchases from three different resources: Bosphorus Books, Istanbul Modern museum, and as a one-time exchange agreement with the Pera Museum.   The material ranges from archeological studies, Byzantine art, Ottoman art including textiles, ceramics, tiles, calligraphy, and metalwork, and exhibition catalogs on nineteenth-century, modern and contemporary art.

Storytime Stroller Parking

Posted by Leah High on May 1st, 2012

The popularity of Storytime (particularly Toddler) has meant that some mornings the library entrance and children’s area gets completely overrun with strollers.  We anticipate it will only increase during the summer.  Security has agreed to allow overflow stroller parking  behind the extra desk at the 80th  (not 81st) street entrance only during Storytime.  Please note the new procedures:

Overflow Stroller Parking Plan for Storytime

  • Nolen Team member who opens will place laminated “Park Strollers” sign out with the regular Storytime sign each morning
  • Storytime Introducer (Nolen Team) will inform visitors during each session about the new over flow parking policy
  • Storytime Introducer (Nolen Team) will call x2000 before Storytime to inform that there is overflow (even if just anticipated)
  • Storytime Introducer (Nolen Team) will help direct traffic as he/she is available
  • Leah will inform Storytime Readers of new policy and encourage them to share with visitors as appropriate

Drop Hold Notices

Posted by Lisa Harms on May 1st, 2012

Drop hold notices are sent to patrons (staff and visitors) when a hold is cancelled at Circulation. Below I’ve listed the reasons a hold might be cancelled and the email text that the patron will receive for each one. Please note that patrons sometimes think the email they received indicates that the book is on hold, but they may have received one of the drop hold notices.

Also, note that the brief bib record of the cancelled hold  is automatically attached to each drop hold notice.
